The new year can provide gardeners with an opportunity to start getting their gardens in order in preparation for the return of spring, with the planting of bulbs and crops. But what about your lawn?
There are many New Year’s resolutions you can make to give your garden a boost in 2022, but it is important not to neglect the lawn, to ensure you have a lush, verdant carpet to enjoy when the warm weather comes back once more.
The soil underneath your lawn can be prone to freezing during winter, meaning that the grass grows very slowly, if at all. But there are ways to maintain your lawn throughout the coldest months to ensure it flourishes in spring.
As mentioned, the cold temperatures mean that your grass will likely not need cutting over winter, but if you do, make sure you don’t cut it too short, to ensure that the roots are protected.
You should also remove grass cuttings to avoid suffocating the lawn. Use a rake to remove cuttings, moss, leaves, and dead material, then use a garden fork to spike holes at regular intervals across the lawn to add extra drainage for those endless rainy days and to avoid waterlogging.
While the grass does not need cutting, it could be a good opportunity to get your lawnmower serviced so that is then ready for spring.
The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) explained that grass will continue to grow if the temperature is above five degrees celsius. This means it may be necessary to use the mower to keep the lawn in trim.
However, between January and February, this isn’t usually necessary.
